5 Tips for Developing Effective Industrial Videos

Posted in Viewpoints

The modern industrial workplace is a marvel of efficiency, technology and moving parts. It’s also a high-stakes environment where safety and seamless teamwork aren’t just corporate buzzwords — they’re the bedrock of daily operations.

Yet for decades, facility managers and safety coordinators have relied on thick training binders, dense manuals and uninspiring slide decks to communicate critical protocols. In an environment where one miscommunication or misstep can bring severe consequences, relying on outdated, text-heavy communication methods is a risk modern enterprises can no longer afford to take.

That’s why professionally produced video plays such an important role in today’s industrial workplace. Executed properly, video can transform the way employees understand, absorb and remember.

Far beyond a simple recorded lecture or a shaky smartphone clip, high-quality video combines compelling visuals, clear narratives and careful messaging to bring workplace priorities to life.

What should business leaders consider when planning their next video?

Tom Delamater, senior consultant at Pecchia Communications, has more than 30 years of experience in broadcast and video production and shared these tips for business leaders planning their next video:

  • Put safety first. Industrial sites present a variety of hazards, particularly for visitors who are unfamiliar with the location. Make sure you and your crew follow all safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) – hard hats, safety goggles, steel-toed boots and whatever else may be required.
  • Don’t cut corners. Professional production techniques make a difference. Industry-grade video equipment, drone videography, robust post-production software and other modern capabilities will add drama and punch to your project.
  • Organize your project – and your time. Create an outline — even a storyboard – and then write a clear, concise script you can use to develop a comprehensive shot list. If possible, conduct a site visit before shooting to familiarize yourself with the location. When you’re on site to shoot the video, refer to your shot list to save time and keep things moving.
  • Watch your language. On the one hand, you must state certain details precisely and in compliance with industry standards. On the other hand, don’t get bogged down in boring, technical jargon. Make it warm, personal and even fun. You don’t want people to just watch, you want them to remember.
  • When in doubt, leave it out. Don’t “add it just to pad it.” It’s too easy to lose viewers’ attention. If something isn’t absolutely necessary, hit the “delete” button. (You’ll love how it feels.) As much as possible, keep things short and to the point.

Ultimately, investing in professional video production is a direct investment in the success of your workforce. By bringing your critical protocols to life on screen, you empower your team to work smarter, communicate better and return home safely every single day.
